In the interest of our national defense, countless workers and their families have made significant sacrifices in the production of our country’s nuclear weapons arsenal. These workers, including uranium miners, millers, and haulers, plutonium producers, and on-site participants at atmospheric nuclear weapons tests, endured occupational hazards without adequate protection. As a result, many developed serious illnesses, disabilities, or even fatal conditions due to exposure to beryllium, ionizing radiation, or other unique hazards associated with nuclear weapons production and testing.

To recognize and honor the hardships experienced by these workers and their families, the United States Congress established the Energy Employees’ Occupational Illness Compensation Act (EEOICPA) program in 2000. This program provides compensation and medical benefits to individuals who have suffered or died from their work at national nuclear sites. Since its inception, the program has distributed over $22 billion in total compensation and medical benefits to approximately 135,000 claimants, surpassing initial estimates.

On October 30, we commemorate the National Day of Remembrance for Nuclear Weapons Workers to pay tribute to these individuals and to remember those we have lost. At the Division of Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation, we are committed to protecting the interests of these workers by making fair, timely, and accurate decisions on claims and ensuring prompt payment of benefits to eligible recipients.

We encourage those workers who have become ill due to their work, as well as their surviving family members, to apply for benefits under the EEOICPA program.
